As senior editor of SeaFood Business magazine in 2004, I noticed that large players in the seafood marketplace were shifting their purchasing to be environmentally responsible or sustainable — which requires much scientific expertise and is loaded with complexity.

Previously, my newspaper work included two award-winning series on the effects of dwindling fish stocks on local fishing communities. Both series won enterprise awards from the New England Associated Press News Executives Association (1993 and 1996). In 1994, I won the The Maine Press Association’s Bob Drake Young Writer’s Award.
